Davey Jay, Esq.

Partner

DAVEY JAY has been passionate about the arts for as long as she can remember. She attributes this, in part, to being named after her uncle, who was the Paintings Conservator for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago. Davey spent 12 years as a ballet dancer, culminating in her final performance with the Hartford Ballet. Soon after, Davey left her hometown of Syracuse, New York and relocated to Florida.

While an undergraduate at the University of Central Florida, Davey worked in the hospitality industry, eventually being promoted to the Assistant Manager of The Cocoa Beach Pier, where she got her first opportunity to work with live music by booking bands and facilitating large-scale events and festivals drawing crowds in the thousands.

Davey may be one of the only people who decided to go to law school because she thought it would be fun. She enrolled at Barry University, Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law, in Orlando, Florida, where she flourished. Davey was on Law Review and a member of Moot Court, which gave her the opportunity to compete and place 9th in the National Entertainment Law Competition at Pepperdine University School of Law. Davey spent a semester a University College London in London, UK, during which time she had the opportunity to explore Europe and put to use of her knowledge of Spanish (ILR Level 3) and French (ILR Level 2). She then returned to Barry University to graduate 6th in her class.

Believing that immersion in an industry is the only way to master it, Davey has dedicated her career as an attorney to entertainment and intellectual property law concerns. She is frequently on set, in the studio, and backstage, so she knows the difference between a C-47 and signal flow. She has worked on deals with major enterprises such as HBO, Warner/Chappell, Discovery, and Sony/Columbia, to indies and startups, and has represented Oscar and Grammy winners along with artists and creatives who are just beginning to embark on their careers. No matter where a client falls on this spectrum, Davey is devoted to protecting their interests and helping them succeed.

In addition to practicing law, Davey educates others about the ins and outs of entertainment law. For over ten years, she has taught at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. Her courses have included Music Copyright and Publishing, Music Law and Contract Negotiations, and, currently, Entertainment and Communications Law for the Film Production MFA degree. In addition, she teaches Continuing Legal Education classes for attorneys who practice entertainment law and frequently is an invited speaker at conferences and events such as The Network Music Conference, The Florida Writer’s Association Annual Conference, and Florida A&M University College of Law: 9th Annual Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Symposium. On occasion, Davey holds free legal education events for members of the local arts and entertainment community, such as Music Law 101.

Davey is the Chair of the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law (EASL) Section of the Florida Bar, a member of Women in Film and Television – Florida (WIFT-FL), and is a past board member of Variety – the Children’s Charity of Florida and The Center for Contemporary Dance, both 501(c)(3) organizations. She loves coffee, Scrabble, indie rock, and crunchy leaves.[/ultimate_modal][ult_ihover thumb_height_width=”250″ gutter_width=”2″][ult_ihover_item title=”Allen Johnston” thumb_img=”id^16593|url^https://musicplacementconference.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/allen-johnston.jpg|caption^null|alt^null|title^allen johnston|description^null” hover_effect=”effect17″ title_responsive_font_size=”desktop:22px;” title_responsive_line_height=”desktop:28px;” desc_responsive_font_size=”desktop:12px;” desc_responsive_line_height=”desktop:18px;”]Sync US Licensing and International Licensing

I’ve had 2 songs released by a division of Warner Music Group (M.O.D.A. Music Group) in Italy and Japan. I began my journey in writing as a child and by the time I became a young adult my passion for writing and my love for music drove me to seek and obtain employment at local music stores and radio stations. After 3 years of experience in record sales, I began working for local radio stations (97.9 FM The Beat of Beasley Broadcasting and 107.9 FM Power 107 of Clear Channel Radio/iHeart Radio). In 2010, I became Vice President of CrossClef Music, an independent record company. That position helped me to advance my knowledge in music business, artist development and music contracts while I continued to write songs for recording artists. When the company downsized, I took a leap of faith and stepped into the role of being an independent songwriter and began to brand myself professionally. In the meantime, a surprising turn of events led me to film producers, directors, actors and crew members. My journey has allowed me to work with award winning music producers and recording artists, academy award winning actors and filmmakers from all over the world and I’ve also placed songs in the film and television markets. My goal is to become an Award Winning songwriter and film music score supervisor.

I wanted to make an even bigger impact in the arts, I wanted a family, I wanted more creative collaborations, I wanted more involvement in the community. Social good was on my mind. I wanted change.

I was already well known as a branding expert creating marketing plans for Mary J Blige, Kris Kross, Ziggy Marley, Supercat, En Vogue, Gerald Levert, The Fugees, Busta Rhymes. During my tenures at Sony and Elektra, I cut my teeth with projects from Sade, Michael Jackson, and Alexander O’Neal.  I knew my shit. But I wanted more.

So I began creating collaborative and innovative programs that combined my love for marketing and branding with my desire to do social good and bring about change. I wanted to create ongoing experiences that would have an impact and build relationships that would last.

I wanted to be able to work with and manage artists and brands and design creative programs and collaborations that would allow both to shine.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to.”

You’ve heard it said. You’ve probably said it yourself. From every boomin’ system comes evidence that soul music is, if not dead, on its last labored breaths. But rest assured: the rumors of soul music’s demise are greatly exaggerated. The soul lives forever. The funk is immortal. And not only do “they” still make ‘em like “they” used to, “they” never stopped making them—the roller skating jams, the wedding dance standards, the flirtatious dedications and the baby-makin’ ballads.

“They” is Kipper Jones, the legendary singer-songwriter whose longevity and body of work testify to the durability of real music and genuine emotion.

Kipper was born in Flint, Michigan, minutes away from the birthplace of Motown. He grew up in Los Angeles, where he trained as a session singer at age 15 under the tutelage of Berry Gordy. It was in L.A. where he continued his soul education under the wings of such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Luther Vandross.

Kipper’s career is a timeline through the history of modern black music, from performing and recording as part of the venerable R&B outfit TEASE, as well as working with an eclectic, multi-generational collection of musicians including Anita Baker, Teddy Pendergrass, Brian McKnight, Teena Marie, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill and Sly Stone.

Kipper has most distinguished himself with his songwriting, which showcases his knack for crafting melodies that stick and lyrics that echo. Writing an indelible song requires more than ingenuity and command of theory—though Kipper has both in spades. What takes a song from good to great is emotional intelligence, and Kipper’s keen observations of life and love have resonated with the likes of Vanessa Williams (“The Right Stuff,” “The Comfort Zone”), Brandy (“I Wanna Be Down,” “Brokenhearted,” “Baby,”), Chaka Khan (“Somethin’ Deep”), and Kenny Lattimore (“Never Too Busy”), to name only a few.

But despite his blessed career, Kipper is not content to rest on his laurels. He currently hosts his own live show at Atlanta’s Cafe 290, where he and his band Kipper Jones’ RnB Circus™ thrill capacity crowds with selections from soul music’s past and present.

He’s also helping to craft soul music’s future, including his latest single, “Closer To The Source,” which lends the Leroy Hutson classic a new coat of paint with the help of drummer Lil’ Jon Roberts and GRAMMY Award winners Snarky Puppy. Kipper has also worked on new music with vocalist Rhonda Thomas and trumpeter Joey Sommerville, Big Band leader, Joe Gransden, and is readying a barrage of new material for himself!

If it wasn’t already clear, soul music is not dead. Kipper Jones, from his home base in Atlanta, Georgia, breathes new life into it each and every day. Tell somebody.

His interest in film started as a kid loving “Star Wars,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Star Trek,” and similar genre films. He’d read up on how the effects were done and watched behind the scenes films. In college, he changed his major from computers to film and graduated with degrees in film, television, and radio production. Early productions he worked on included “Superboy,” “Reading Rainbow,” and the horror film “Scarecrows.” A few years later he transitioned to the front of the camera with small parts in “SeaQuest” and other locally shot films, commercials, and print media. He left production to pursue a career in the simulation field, creating the visuals and material used within simulators and other military-related training. To him, this was like the visual effects that first attracted him to film and the CGI that was now growing within the industry. He currently assists with nurse training by operating medical simulation equipment and acting as the patients they need to diagnose.

In 2010 Michael returned to the industry strictly as a hobby to do modeling work and acting. A short time later he joined the Orlando group “Let’s Make a Movie” (LMAM) and performed in several of their productions. The bug hit and the creative gears began to turn in his head once again as he got more involved with writing, editing, and pursuing acting, and eventually becoming one of the organizers for LMAM. He’s appeared in such shorts and feature-length films such as “Zombros,” “Possessed,” “Unlawful Justice,” “Family Flavors with Kid Kulinaire,” winner of the Orlando Urban Film Festival’s best dramatic short 2015, “Protection,” and Most Innovative 2016, “Cassandra,” which he also edited. He won Best Actor in the Orlando Independent Filmmaker 2017 Valentine’s Challenge film “Not So Perfect Opportunity,” and took Fifth Place as Best Animated Film in the 15 Second International Horror Film Challenge 2017.

In 2017 he wrote, directed, and performed in a concept film for a Western Steampunk series called “The Proteus Logs,” that he hopes will generate interest and develop into a series. He’s also written other scripts now in pre-production and scheduled to shoot early 2018, while still acting and editing other local and national films and commercials including a NASCAR commercial aired during the Superbowl. 2018 promises to be a busy year with several productions he’s working with now in pre-production and scheduled film then.[/ultimate_modal][ult_ihover thumb_height_width=”250″ gutter_width=”2″][ult_ihover_item title=”Deon “Struc Supreme“ Bowden” thumb_img=”id^16677|url^https://musicplacementconference.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/STRUC-SUPREME-PIC-1.jpg|caption^null|alt^null|title^STRUC SUPREME PIC (1)|description^null” hover_effect=”effect17″ title_responsive_font_size=”desktop:22px;” title_responsive_line_height=”desktop:28px;” desc_responsive_font_size=”desktop:12px;” desc_responsive_line_height=”desktop:18px;”]That Rabbit Distribution[/ult_ihover_item][/ult_ihover][ultimate_modal modal_title=”Deon’s Bio” btn_size=”md” btn_bg_color=”#d98a2c” btn_bg_hover_color=”#d98a2c” btn_text=”Deon’s Bio” modal_size=”medium” overlay_bg_opacity=”80″ header_bg_color=”#d98a2c” img_size=”80″ header_text_color=”#171544″ btn_txt_color=”#ffffff”]
